Repository Policy
In accordance with the publishing and copyright policies of Annals of Surgery, authors are encouraged to maximize the visibility and impact of their research through responsible sharing and archiving. When depositing, reusing, distributing, or posting any version of an article, authors must provide appropriate citation details and acknowledge Annals of Surgery as the original publication source. Where available, the Digital Object Identifier (DOI) and a link to the published article must be included.
Annals of Surgery recognizes the importance of long-term preservation and accessibility of scholarly content. Authors may deposit permitted versions of their manuscripts in institutional repositories, funding agency repositories, personal websites, and other non-commercial scholarly platforms, subject to the journal's copyright and licensing requirements.
The various stages of manuscript sharing are described below.
AOM (Author's Original Manuscript)
The Author's Original Manuscript (AOM) is the version of the manuscript before peer review and prior to submission or acceptance by the journal.
Authors may:
- Share the AOM on personal websites, institutional repositories, scholarly collaboration networks, and non-commercial preprint servers.
- Distribute the manuscript publicly before submission without restriction.
Posting a manuscript on a recognized preprint server will not be considered prior publication. Authors should disclose any preprint posting during manuscript submission.
After publication, authors should update the preprint record to include:
- The full citation of the published article.
- A direct link to the Version of Record.
- The article DOI.
AM (Accepted Manuscript)
The Accepted Manuscript (AM) is the version that has successfully completed peer review and has been accepted for publication but has not yet undergone copyediting, typesetting, or final production.
Authors may deposit the Accepted Manuscript in accordance with journal and funder requirements. When sharing the Accepted Manuscript, authors should include the following statement:
"This is an accepted manuscript of an article accepted for publication in Annals of Surgery. The final published Version of Record is available via the journal website at [DOI Link]."
The DOI and citation details should be added as soon as they become available.
VOR (Version of Record)
The Version of Record (VOR) is the final published article that has undergone copyediting, typesetting, proof correction, and publication with an assigned DOI.
Upon publication, authors are encouraged to:
- Share links to the published article using the DOI.
- Include complete citation information when referencing the article.
- Comply with the copyright and licensing terms applicable to the published article.
Where permitted by the publication agreement or applicable open-access license, authors may deposit or share the published article in approved repositories and websites. The journal should be clearly cited as the original source of publication.
When linking to the Version of Record, authors should use the following acknowledgment:
"This article was published in Annals of Surgery and is available online at: [Article DOI]."
Citation Requirement
For all archived versions of a manuscript, authors must:
- Provide a complete bibliographic citation.
- Include the article DOI whenever available.
- Link readers to the Version of Record.
- Clearly identify the version being shared (AOM, AM, or VOR).
These practices support accurate citation, enhance research visibility, and ensure readers have access to the authoritative published version of the work.
